Nuts & Seeds

Nuts and seeds are nutrient-dense plant foods prized for their healthy fats, protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Though often grouped together in cooking and nutrition, they come from different parts of plants and have distinct botanical identities. What Are Nuts? In everyday language, a nut is a hard-shelled, dry fruit or seed that typically contains a single edible kernel. Botanically, true nuts (like hazelnuts and chestnuts) are indehiscent fruits—meaning the shell does not split open to release the seed. However, the culinary definition is broader and includes many drupes (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans) and even legumes (peanuts). What Are Seeds? A seed is a mature ovule of a flowering plant, consisting of an embryo, stored food (endosperm), and a protective outer coat. Seeds are the reproductive units that can grow into new plants. Unlike nuts, seeds often come from vegetables, fruits, flowers, or grains and are typically smaller.
